Journal Requirements

As in any craft, the more you practice, the better you get. Starting to get in the habit of writing now will especially help prepare you for your playwrighting residency in the the spring.

Q: Why journals?
A:  1)    When you’re rich and famous you’ll have part of your autobiography already written!
2)    Journals give you an opportunity to express yourself on paper. Theatre and the arts are all about expression. Keeping a journal is just another outlet for creative energy. They are also a powerful tool for self-reflection, which is essential for developing believable characters.

Q: Will we read your journals?
A: Yes. However, if there is something you don’t want our eyes to see, simply fold over the entry. If you want your journal to be a place where you can talk to us, that’s cool too. Leave us questions. We can do our best to answer them.

Q: Do journals HAVE to be written? Can we draw? Sketch? Paste stuff from magazines?
A: Um, YEAH! Journals should be a place to put a ton of inspiration you can dray from in the future. Though on occasion you will be given specific assignments and told to put them in your journal, on the whole, your journal is YOUR journal. Having said this, in order to receive full credit for your journal assignments, they must be at least one page in length (front and back if your journal is ½ the size of a traditional notebook or if you have large writing) and your journal MUST be turned in on time.

Unless otherwise assigned, a minimum of FOUR journal entries are due each month – 1 per week.

In short:
Here are the things you need to know about your journals:
* You are required to write at least 4 journal entries a month.
* Journals are collected on the last Friday of every month, unless otherwise noted.
* If you have a small journal (like 5x7), your entry will need to be 1 full page - front and back.
* If you have a regular size journal (8.5x11), your entry will need to be 1 page - front only, unless you have large writing, then you will need to have your entry be front & back.
* You are encouraged to be creative in your journals . Cut and glue things.from newspapers and magazines. Not all of your entries need to be written. However, if you are given an assignment that needs to be put in your journal, it needs to be written unless otherwise stated.
* If you don't want us to read something, we won't. Just fold the page over. So long as we can see that there is writing on the page, you will still get credit.
